I'd complain that they don't write enough swing-esque songs, but the fact is they don't write enough songs period. They've been around how many years and they're only just about to release their 3rd full album? Come on guys, everything you do is golden, I'm dying for more music from you.

That's what I love about metal; you can mix it with any other genre and it sounds awesome as fuck.
For anyone who wants to listen to other bands and songs with maybe a similar style to DSO, here are some of my personal recommendations
Bands: UneXpect, Stolen Babies
, Madder Mortem, Mr. Bungle, Pinkly Smooth, Akphaezya, Trepalium (swing death metal (yes that's a thing and it fucking rocks)), Ram-Zet, öOoOoOoOoOo/Chenille (one of my favorite bands of all time. Seriously stop what you're doing right now and go listen to their album Samen (it's on RUclips); it's fucking incredible and they deserve more recognition)
Songs: "Bad Devil" by Devin Townsend (this song had to have been a big influence on DSO), "Anti-Product" by Strapping Young Lad (same with this song), "Impress Your Creators" by Tub Ring (also a fantastic and criminally underrated band)
That's all I've got for the moment; if I missed any please let me know!

love this. yes, i can see how some might call it "generic" when compared to Balrog Boogie and ATDD, but it is still more original than 90% of modern music. and i guarantee the other 10 songs will be crazier. they just always open with epic swing songs.

It's just a pentatonic riff. When you only have five notes, there's going to be some repetition.

Riff or not, it most definitely IS "Summertime" by George Gershwin. It is an obvious homage to the classic 1935 swing/opera Porgy and Bess.
